About
A finance executive who has lived construction.
Bob Gushue founded Underpin Advisors to give specialty contractors the finance leadership that larger companies take for granted.
He has served as CFO, VP of Finance and Corporate Controller, most of that time inside specialty construction contractors. He is usually the person owners call when the numbers stop making sense: when the WIP no longer ties out, the bank is asking questions, or the business is under more pressure than its finance function can carry.
Restructuring and recovery
Bob’s work includes some of the hardest situations a company can face:
- A multistate retailer of about $30 million. He led it through the 2008 recession and a Chapter 11 reorganization, right-sizing it to roughly $12 million with a debt load it could carry. The process ended in a generational ownership transfer.
- A multistate architectural metals contractor of about $90 million. He led an out-of-court restructuring, expanded the company’s line of credit, and standardized its WIP process and monthly review.
- A national unionized institutional construction contractor of about $70 million. He ran finance through Chapter 11, including cash collateral budgets and regular monthly closes, and through the wind-down identified a claim of more than $25 million against a creditor.
How he works
His pattern is consistent: walk into disorder, find where the cash and margin are going, and build a finance function the owner, the bank and the surety can trust.
Bob holds an MBA from Temple University. He is based in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, with commutable access to the Philadelphia region, and works in person with clients across southeastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey and northern Delaware.
